What is Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux, or as it is more commonly known GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a condition where the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus (known as the lower esophageal sphincter) does not function properly and allows stomach acid and contents to backup or "reflux" into the esophagus.
This causes a very uncomfortable and painful burning sensation for the sufferer and can inflame and damage to the esophaus lining.
Acid Reflux Symptom
Many people suffer with acid reflux symptom every day and they can experience a painful burning sensation as the stomach liquids and contents reflux into the esophagus.
In the majority of cases acid reflux symptoms are painful but do not cause any real risk to the sufferers health. Where this is the case, it is known as "uncomplicated" acide reflux.
The three most common acid reflux symptoms are nausea, regurgitation and heartburn.
Nausea
It is common for patients suffering with acid reflux to compain of nausea. In fact it is so common that most doctors will suspect acid reflux when they are seeing a patient who has nausea with no apparent cause.
Regurgitation
Regurgitation occurs when refluxed stomach acid and contents backup up into the mouth. When the sufferer regurgitates they often experience a brning sensation when the refluxed liquid bypass the sphincter at the top of the esophagus (the upper esophageal sphincter). The burning sensation is often accompanied by an acidic taste. If the sufferer experiences regurgitation often then their teeth may be damaged due to the acid eroding the tooth enamel.
Heartburn
Probably the most common acid reflux symptom is heartburn, which is usually characterized as a searing pain in the chest. It can beign in the abdomen and may even travel to the back of the neck. This can be the cause of alarm for he sufferer as painful acid reflux symptoms have been mistaken as a heart attack. Heartburn is most prevalent after eating a meal.
There are many other acid reflux symptoms such as an intensifying of asthma and coughs and an inflammation of the throat larynx or lungs. The sufferer may also exprience fluid in their sinuses or middle ear.
Most forms of acid refux do not pose any serious health risks although there can be complications such as ulcers. If liquid from the stomach refluxes and damages the esophagus lining, inflammation can occur and if that damage is deep enough then ulcers can form.
